The Staggering Numbers of the Invasion at our Southern Border.
What is Title 42? What does this level of immigration mean for the country?
There is a current invasion in the US that will affect citizens in more ways than one. Title 42 ended today, which sparked a massive invasion of illegal immigrants crossing our southern border. These immigrants are crossing and either staying put in cities around the border or being transported to different sanctuary cities around the US.
What is Title 42?
Title 42 was created during the pandemic to essentially grant the government the ability to take emergency action to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The law was first implemented by former President Trump in March 2020 to regulate border crossings. Under the Trump Administration, Title 42 allowed the government to override the immigration law that enabled individuals to seek asylum after they entered into the United States illegally. Enacting Title 42 allowed the U.S. government to send individuals right back across the border, no questions asked, all in an attempt to stop the spread of COVID-19. Because of it, border crossing plummeted.
On Thursday, May 11th, Title 42 will expire. The US Government will revert back to old border crossing protocols. Upon crossing the border, most immigrants will be detained and eventually released (with a court date). With the over whelming numbers of immigrants planning to cross the border Thursday, the old protocols won’t be able to handle it.
How Many People are Crossing the Border? How Many Already Have?
The number of people crossing the border per month is already at a historical high. All of the pent-up demand from individuals barred from crossing the border will overwhelm the system. Below is the historical data of border crossings.

From 2013 to 2018 the average number of crossings was about 498,000. These numbers include 3 years of Obama and 3 years of Trump. The current numbers:

From 2020 to March of 2023, the average number of crossings was about 1,448,000. These numbers include 1 year of Trump and 2.5 years of Biden. Through Biden’s Presidency, crossings have averaged 1,778,000 per year which is 3 times higher than previous administrations.
Border crossings increased 278% from 2020 to 2021. And in the first six months of 2023 (2023 month starts in October) they are up 15% over 2021. Even crazier, border crossings in the first six months of 2023 are up a staggering 189% from 2019. There is a full-blown crisis at the border.
What Does This Level of Illegal Immigration Mean for the Country?
Besides the common issue of stealing jobs and undercutting the working-class salary, this level of illegal immigration will cause much bigger problems. The first problem is where to put all these people. Border towns like El Paso and Brownsville have declared state of emergencies partially because of the sheer number of people in their city. Below is a picture of a street in El Paso.

This is coming to a city near you. Over the past year, Governer Abbott (Texas) and Governor DeStantis (Florida) have been transporting immigrants (on buses and planes) to “sanctuary cities” across the country. I put sanctuary cities in quotations because these cities claim to welcome as many immigrants as possible, yet when they get sent busloads of them, they seem to complain about it. Here is an article about New York Mayor, Eric Adam, on the topic.
The next big issue is drugs and human trafficking. The US is seeing unprecedented amounts of fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine cross the southern border. These drugs are making it to cities all around the country and are leading to a major overdose problem. Human trafficking is also a massive issue. In 2021 and 2022, the southern border saw new highs of unaccompanied minors crossing the border. Below is a graph showing the number of single minors crossing the border.

The last big issue with mass illegal immigration is the amount of money that’s needed to fund the food, shelter, water, clothes, phones (yes phones), transportation, legal fees that go along with processing, housing and deporting illegal immigrants. It should be no surprise to you that we are the ones getting the bill for this crisis. In a time when money isn’t cheap, costs have been rising, and the economy is ever tightening, the last thing our government should be spending more money on is crisis that could have easily been prevented.
